Great book. Lots of detail on behind-the-scenes planning that took place, also includes information on some of the debates over the type/method of bombinmg campaign to implement. Most of all an appreciation for the courage of the air crews. What they went thru is almost unbelievable. Real heroes!

The Men Who Bombed the Reich Men and Battle Bernard C Nalty Carl Berger 9780525930051 Books Reviews

This book covers old territory- the B-17s encountering Fw 190s and Me 109s after the shorter-ranged Spitfires and P-38s returned home. Of the first and second raids on Schweinfurt, saying they cost 36 and 60 bombers, Nalty and Berger conclude
'The self-defending bomber formation had been unable to defeat Germany's fighter force. The Luftwaffe had created a defensive array more formidable than Air Corps theoreticians had dreamed possible when the prototype Flying Fortress took to the air. Until a suitable escort fighter appeared, enemy airmen could keep the American bombers under unremitting attack for as long as the strike force remained over German soil.' (p. 48) So true.
Although the RAF Bomber Command was pursuing the 'Area Bombing' strategy, delivering more tons of bombs per raid, it receives less coverage- not least because fewer pictures were available of combat in the dark. They never experienced the percentage losses that the daylight bombers suffered. To defeat German radar, 'Window' had been invented; narrow strips of foil-lined paper that the crews dropped at intervals that filled screens with interference
'To deal with Window, Kammhuber shifted from his original linear defense to a defense in depth, in which his men picked up British electronic signals, such as pulses from the H2S radar (ground-mapping radar in the planes), to locate the bomber stream. A ground controller used this information to coach radar equipped night fighters into position to intercept. As they had in the past, these twin-engine aircraft, among them the new Dornier Do 217 and Heinkel He 219, tried to approach their victims from behind and slightly below.' (p. 68) Oh- really? The Do 217 was a bomber (barely able to catch a Lancaster bomber), and when equipped with guns, radar aerials, heavier and less maneuverable than the common night fighter- Me 110; and the Messerschmitt was 100 knots faster. The Heinkel, superior to both, was plagued by delivery delays so did not fly many interceptions.
Okay, there are photos of smoking Liberators, near collisions and Fortresses diving in flames. These alternate with rubble-filled streets in Berlin or twisted railroad tracks. The text focuses on command decisions, generic references to Luftwaffe fighters attacking, and the 'Shuttle Raid' of B-17s and P-51s flying from England to Russia.
It concludes with the U.S. airmen who earned Congressional Medal of Honor and some conclusions.
