Soul Circus George P Pelecanos Books

George Pelecanos is an exceptional writer, but Soul Circus is the most powerful novel of his that I have yet read. The third novel in his Derek Strange series, it concerns the jockeying for position of two small-time drug dealers and their mutual interactions with a P.G. County arms dealer. The arms dealer, Strange, and his associate, a white man named Quinn, are all ex-cops. While the story is straightforward, the narrative is multi-layered and richly textured. This is, as always with Pelecanos, a gritty and often grim book, the last possible book desired by the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce. I love its simplicity and clarity. The characters are carefully etched and the ending is as satisfying as it is inevitable. Note to hardcover buyers: this book may still be available on your local remainder shelf.

Soul Circus George P Pelecanos Books Reviews

Mr. Pelecanos spins very intricate tales that depict the back-street experiences of Washington, DC. I strongly recommend you take the time to take the plunge and submerge yourself in experiencing his world.
Terrific book, the best of this series and Pellecanos always delivers.
The audio was hard to understand at normal speed.
I had to slow down the speed to understand the the novel.
It may be that the "vernacular" street talk used is just not
what I'm used to hearing.
I love Pelecanos style, and while I didn't like this one quite as much as the last two Derek Strange books, I still liked it way more than most books I've read lately.
This book brings the reader back to the skull-thuggery of the DC suburbs, so tightly crafted and smooth until the roof falls in and the characters explode. Pelecanos has a marvelous ear for the language of this doomed subculture, offset by the flawed gallantry of Derrick and Terry, the armed missionaries of decency and regret. This book is why we read Pelecanos.
Too many series become predictable and unsustainable. Look at Parker and Crais and sometimes Connelly, certainly Sandford. But not Pelacanos. I saw another review that chastised the author for his DC wanderings and his sidetrips into music and westerns. I always check out what the characters are listening to, reading or watching...it's half the fun of a Pelacanos novel. The other thing is the DC as small town theme. Any of Pelacanos characters are likely to show up in any series. I like this post modern aspect to the noirish crime novel. The bad guys are never boring; The good guys never too smart for their own good. I'd be hard pressed to tell any newcomer where to start with this writer. Just start somewhere and then figure it out for yourself.
The Derek Strange and Terry Quinn books are great reading, and Soul Circus is the best so far. I couldn't put it down. The people in this book were real. The title may be a bit misleading, and I won't explain why, but you can't go wrong with this one.
Derek Strange is hired to find evidence to keep Granville Oliver from getting the chair. Terry Quinn is helping his girlfriend find a missing girl. How will their cases intersect with a brewing turf war between two gangs?

In this Strange and Quinn outing, Pelecanos explores the gang life in Washington DC even deeper than he has in the past and Strange and Quinn are drowning in it. Strange is tracking down evidence that could keep a known gangster alive out of guilt for killing the man's father when he was a cop. Quinn's helping his girlfriend Sue Tracy find a missing girl. Dewayne Durham and Horace McKinley are heading toward a confrontation that can only end in violence. Dewayne's loser brother Mario touches a spark to a trail of gunpowder with an act of thoughtless violence that sends everything into motion.

Soul Circus has all the Pelecanos hallmarks pop culture references, philosophical talk about the nature of guns, violence, and life in DC, and of course, Nick Stefanos. Things start getting tense once Mario finds himself in the soup and they don't let up until a couple bloody moments near the end.

The antagonists in Soul Circus are among Pelecanos' best I've read so far. Dewayne's crew and McKinley's crew are all much more developed than the heavies in most detective fiction. Monkey's feelings toward Juwan and his reluctance to harm the kid and Dewayne's feelings for his loser brother made the gangsters seem very real to me. Foreman and his code of ethics and love for his girlfriend made him surprisingly deep for a gunrunner, much more than I thought originally. Strange and Quinn were true to themselves throughout.

Strange and Quinn don't actually accomplish much in this book but the detecting is there, as is the violence. Too bad Pelecanos hasn't written more Derek Strange books since I only have one left.
