Alan Clayson writes in the impressionistic style that you find in the English music magazines, so you have to have a good amount of knowledge about the 60s English music scene (and Keith Moon) to make sense of some of his writing. The man has an encyclopediac knowledge of the era and obviously enjoyed himself very much in the 60s. His essays tend to go off on tangents that oftentimes have very little to do with Keith Moon but he managed to keep my interest and has some interesting points to make. The essays proceed in a roughly chronologic fashion and finish with Clayson's ruminations about the death of Keith Moon and the death of rock music in general. The vignettes at the end of each essay featuring various musicians and others who knew Moon were entertaining. On the whole, this book is a good read for those (like me) who are long time fans of the Who and the British scene of the 1960s.

Keith Moon Instant Party Musings Memories and Minutiae Alan Clayson Rob Johnstone 9781842403105 Books Reviews

This book is an utter 24 karat mess. The title leads you to think you're about to read a series of funny reports about Moonie's antics but then what you really get is an awfully written and pointless essay about... yes, what is this book all about? Spare your money.
Not your usual biography but a book made up of detailed essays. The authors writing at times can be hard to take in but even so the research that has gone into putting such a book together over rides that and makes it a very funny and enjoyable read! A group of stories from friends that spent time with Moon, including hanging with ex-Beatles in California! This truly is a fantastic account of Moon!
The only reason I gave 2 stars, is because like a test in which there are essay questions, you have to give some credit for writing anything. The other star is for the subject. The book is very hard to follow unless you speak and understand the "King's English". It is mostly a collection of confusing rambling on's and name dropping and such blag. To me, the sentence structure of most of what I read, (to page 112 before I said the hell with it)was too long and filled with confusing verbs, adjectives and things. Most went off into left field. By the time I reached the end of a sentence, I had forgotten what I had read in the first part. I do not consider myself a genius or anything like that, but I do have a good level of reading ability. Maybe this book will get better when I decide to devote more time and effort to decyphering it. It doesnt claim to be a biography and now I see why. I recommend the Full Moon book by Dougal butler or the Tony Fletcher book, Moon The Life And death of A Rock Legend. This book does look good on my bookshelf though. Cheers!
This book was perfect for my husband, who has been a drummer for almost 40 years. Keith Moon is one of his favorites. Some of the stunts that are described in the book are a little disturbing, but that is who Moon was! I would recommend this book to anyone who followed The Who and wants to know more about the musicians.
It was okay but mostly talked about other people. Felt it wandered off course too much for me as far as other artists go, there are better books that focus on Keith and a new one is coming out.
