This story was too underwritten. The relationship wasn't developed. Large blocks of telling were used when these situations should have been shown. Long blocks of time were skipped over when events taking place during those times should have been developed and should have added to the conflict in the story. It's difficult to understand why so many shortcuts were taken and omissions made in this story. The MCs were likable and the setting handled well enough. The research appears to have been done to create a realistic setting, But the story was so shortchanged that I wondered why the author even bothered to write it and call it a romance. It's about eighty pages long so probably just another 30 or 40 pages could have made it an enjoyable read. I don't mind reading novellas, but they need to be long enough to be a fleshed-out story.

A Dream Defiant is an interracial historical romance, the main reason I chose this book. Elijah Cameron is the son of runaway slaves, who worked his way up the command of the British Army or as far up as a black man could go at the time. He has the unique situation of being a black man with options in a time many were slaves. He came from an educated background, but went against his family's wishes and joined the military.

Rose Merrifield is the wife of one of Elijah's soldiers, who ends up dying during a looting where he fought a French soldier for a necklace for his wife. Rose is a smart and loving woman with a talent for cooking. (Ladies, you would be amazed how far this skill can help in attracting and keeping a military man. lol) Rose must take a husband for protection. She picks Elijah because she trusts him even though he is black.

This story was different from most historical romances I've read. There isn't an abundance of multicultural historicals, much less interracial. This color aspect builds in a wealth of inherent conflict within the storyline. Both Elijah and Rose are likable characters. I actually really admired Elijah's strength and integrity. He learned to thrive in a world most men of his lineage would've never had the change to even experience, fighting prejudice and knowing he would never be an equal to the white soldiers.

I hadn't realized this was a novella when I began reading. With the complexity of the storyline and relationship, I don't believe a novella did this interesting concept justice. I wanted so much more from the story. While it was not bad, it could've been so much more given the opportunity to truly delve into the difficulties of being in an interracial relationship with a recently widowed white female with a white child in the 1800's.

The plot provided a strong set up for a good story. I kept reading waiting for it to go deeper into the conflict, searching for the hurt and pain that should have been embedded in the characters. Unfortunately, the story fell flat. Everything was too easy. A minimal amount of problems (actually just two) quickly worked themselves out with a few words from Elijah. I'm not sure I buy the parents of Rose's dead husband suddenly having a change of heart about the new black husband she married two days after their son died just because Elijah had a few words with their daughter. Even in a contemporary interracial romance there is more conflict than that.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I am willing to try another book by her, but I doubt it will be a novella, especially if it's dealing with a complex relationship.
Elijah was a proud man of color that fought side-by-side with soldiers to defeat the French. His troops were respectful and accepting of his rank and stature based on his ability to lead. When one of the men under his direction is killed during battle, Elijah is the one to step up and offer the man's widow the possibility of marriage. This arrangement is acceptable to everyone, as it will keep Rose safe from the men that look to take advantage of her situation. This marriage would also give Elijah his heart's desire fulfilled with the woman he has always desired from a distance.

Knowing the danger that was ahead of her Rose marries Elijah and with her son, they become an unconventional but loving family. With the course of both of their lives altered Rose and Elijah set forth to pursue her dream of owning an inn. This new life would allow her to explore her talent for cooking. This dream meant returning to her late husband's home where the past will collide with the present she has with Elijah. The accepting is slow and at times hurtful toward the couple but day by day, each person touched with the taste of the life Elijah and Rose have built warms every closed heart.

Susanna Fraser provides every reader with a compelling and intriguing story of how the lines of love are not easily defined.
Though I wished it had been a full-length novel to give some events more breathing room, I really enjoyed this interracial M/F novella set during the Napoleonic wars, specifically in 1813 Spain in a British Army camp. Elijah Cameron is the black son of runaway slaves who has worked his way up in the Army as best he can given racial prejudice. Rose Merrifield is widowed suddenly, and must re-marry immediately if she wishes to stay safe, since there's a (true) rumor that her dead husband left her something valuable. Elijah and Rose already know and admire each other. That allows the author to create what I thought was the strongest part of this story the thoughtful discussion and negotiation they both go through - with each other and themselves - to ensure their sudden marriage will succeed. The novella follows them back home to England, where it's maybe a bit rushed getting them settled into an HEA, but I didn't mind (much) because I so enjoyed the characters.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good love story. I enjoyed the story and the characters.
I have all of Fraser's books. My favorite is the Sergeant's Lady. I thought this book was very good also, but it was too short. I liked the character development but I was disappointed that she didn't spend anytime talking about what happened when they go back to
England. it is doubtful in that time period that people would have been as accepting as Fraser suggests
